Spin Cycle: Prom

Sprite's Keeper

I really don’t know what to say on this subject. I didn’t get far enough in high school to go myself and never had any kids to send off to the prom, maybe I’ll just have to wait till one of the grandkids get old enough. Then again that won’t work either, because 7 out of 8 grandkids are home schooled. Do they even have home schooled proms?

By time I got to my second go-around with the 9th grade, I got fed up with it all and quit. I had already done two rounds in the 7th grade and had been on probationary status since the 5th grade. Yeah school and I didn’t get along very well!

I was supposed to have been a junior in high school but instead I was still a freshman. All my friends had moved on and I was still stuck, making it to the prom was the last thing on my priority level.

Now to be fair, I wasn’t a bad student. I did great on tests and in class work, but as far as homework went…well lets just say it never made it out of my locker! I really do and did enjoy learning new things, but I knew taking homework home was a waste of energy. I never had the time to do it, not with three kids to take care of and a house to clean. No, not my kids, nor my house. My parent’s kids and house. My parents always claimed it was my chores and my responsibility as the oldest to help with the kids. So…needless to say homework was futile.

I guess this post just changed topics from the prom to my education. I mean, really you can’t have the prom without the education. Right? Anyway, sorry about that.

The word "Prom" evokes such emotions for me:
Longing
Wonderment
Celebration
Lost opportunity
Disappointment
Anger
Joy (for others)
Plus many more...

To me it marks such a special event, that one has made it through the best and most difficult time in their lives. You all can’t tell me high school was a breeze!
It also marks friendship and boyfriends. I would imagine one would be so thrilled and get all giddy with their friends. Then there is the boy that asked to be your date or going with the boyfriend you are dating. Both of these things will be remembered for a life time.

There would also be the dress and stress factor too. What to wear, what to wear!
Oh and of course the dancing too. Now that I think about it, I’m glad I didn’t go! Just kidding! Although really, who would want to be subjected to my moves?! LOL!

I asked my mother if she had gone to her prom. She said yes, BUT she was the guy's second date! This kid thought for sure one of the two was going to say NO, neither did. I'm sorry to say I laughed my fool head off when she told me this. Okay fine, I'm not sorry. It is still funny!

My best thing that reminds me that kids really do go to prom, is the two pics I have. One of my step son and another of my step daughter at their proms.

I would have to say that if I had gone to the prom I would have been the oldest kid there! Cause who knows how long it would have taken me to get to the 12th grade! LOL!

Prom was weird for me, I lived in Dallas but in the middle of high school, moved out west to a tiny Texas town that was stuck in time where there was not much to do.
It was held in a building they called the 'canteen', which was like a WWII soldier tribute building.

I was so shy even if anyone had asked me to the prom their would not have been enough money for a dress and I would have been to shy to accept an invitation. So that isn't anything I really miss. I do miss the fun I could have had if I was not so shy and poor, financially. I am in the market for a camera. What kind did you get?? I have a cheap little camera that is working but falling apart.

I find myself a little angry at your parents, possibly because it reminds me of how my parents treated me. I had to go to work after school and then had chores to do when I got home. It seems so unfair! It was their responsibility to make sure you (we) had time to do your (our) homework!

That's sad that you had so much responsibility at such a young age. I think that't the way my oldest sister felt. Funny that when I was in my hometown last year, I saw the boy (now a man) that I went to jr. prom with. I had no ides who he was until my husband told me. But he didn't recognize me either!

You are quite funny Heather :)

We do not have proms so that settles it.

I loved prom. The dressing up makes you feel so grownup! I'm still friends with all three of the boys I attended proms with! Even after 20 odd years.

I loved helping Molly get ready for her proms, she looked so beautiful!!

I'm sad that you missed out on yours, and had so much responsibility, you deserve better.

Never went to a school dance, prom or not, never missed it. I had only one kid to take care of, my brother, but I did well in school, took me away mentally from the hell that was home.

Is it age? Senility? I cannot remember going to a prom. I know I did. I've seen the picture of Sue and me....she with her strapless gown and me in white coat (yes, it was that long ago) and red boutonniere. But I don't remember it.

Maybe it was too traumatic and I flushed it from my memory.

Uh, how do I indicate that I am a follower of your blog. Do I have to sign onto Facebook? But I don't do Facebook. Is technology messing my mind up again?

Never went to prom either. It seemed that only the popular kids went, so all of my friends didn't go and I didn't either. I did have a friend ask me if I wanted to go when I was attending college, but I had other commitments at the time and couldn't go home for it.

Eric...Oh that would have been awful. Not the type of party one imagines for their prom.

Lucy...Money for a dress would have been an issue for me too!

Jen...I was mad for a very long time (like a decade), till I realized what kind of things they were dealing with at the time.

Suzicate...Being the oldest isn't very easy. I don't think I would recognize anyone either.

Ocean Girl...Sometimes I wish we didn't have them either. Way to much pressure for the unpopular and poor.

Spot...Wow!! Still friends?!! I haven't seen nor heard from any of my ex's! For some...I thank goodness for!

Grace...I felt that way for the longest time, it was the going home part that I dreaded.

Jerry...LOL!!! I feel that way when my dad starts talking of things I did and I'm like..If you say soo! LOL!

Jerry...You are in my followers. I think your talking about the facebook following, that is different and seperate from the blogger following. Folks on facebook can have my blog streamed directly to there facebook page.

CoJoh...I'm finding more and more folks who didn't go. I would have never thought there was so many.

Stepdaughter #2 -- Is it my picture of prom you have?? Just wondering who's you were talking about.
P/S - prom for me is just plain painful memories -- both years I was miserable - and Damian's father cheated on me the night before my senior prom - I wasn't even going to go - but his dad had already paid for nearly everything- so that's the only reason I did - because he wanted to have some pictures.
