Vegetables I Miss

When I was very young, living in Maine.

I spent a lot of time with my grandparents. My grandfather and I used to love this one type of vegetable, I even went with him once to pick them. I would later learn it was Fiddleheads. Delicous, especially with butter!

My mother used to have me go out into the yard and pick the leaves off of the dandelions and then she would make soup with them or serve them as a vegetable. Oh my, those Dandelion greens were good!

All my growing up in Maine, we had Rhubarb pie. Anyone from the north knows this is good stuff! Very few people in the south even know what Rhubarb is. I just learnt (right now) that it is a vegetable. I was eating a vegetable pie all those years and never knew it. Man my parents were sneaky!

Then there is my mothers Creamed Cabbage. She came to stay with me once while I was recovering from surgery and I made her make me a huge pot and freeze the leftovers. It was that good!!

What kind of foods do you miss from your childhood?

Mustard greens! I love them but absolutely no one in my family will touch them. And okra. My mom makes the best fried okra ever. Again, not a vegetable that makes it into my family's diet. Most of the rest of my favorite childhood foods I've learned to make myself and have now become the one everyone asks to make those things for family gatherings.

Btw, my mother had a huge garden when we lived in England and she had rhubarb and gooseberries in it! She made pies from both.

I've only ever had rhubarb in pie, yum. Never had fiddleheads. I love brussel sprouts. Cabbage too!

I always thought that rhubarb was a southern thang....I thought I'd remembered an expression "Hope the rain don't hurt the rhubarb"...and I'd remembered it with a southern twang.

Yikes. I guess my memory really IS shot.

I remember my mom saying milk was so expensive and there were 4 of us kids under the age of 8. She'd mix the whole milk with powdered milk and stand in front of the sink shaking it up. We thought it was hilarious 'cause we thought she was dancing.

Yikes...I guess I AM losing it.

I love okra. And greenbeans. And hot peppers. I'm ready for some fried green tomatoes, too!

Spot...Never tried Mustard greens or gooseberry pie. I haven't had Okra in a long while. Hubby doen't like it, so why buy it.

Maureen...Brussel sprouts, yup we eat those all the time.

Kathryn...Down here in Texas, you are hard pressed to find Rhubarb in the stores and if you are lucky enough to find it, the price would be equal to bying a lobster!
My mom also did the half milk, half powder!

Tinkerschnitzel...I tried the fried green tomatoes once, shortly after the movie came out. I don't think I could do it again!

Vegetables would not be on any list of foods I miss, they are evil and should never be eaten.

Now for those of you who like vegetables look at it this way; Vegetables have feeling too, don’t eat them.

I miss fresh picked blackberries, right from tree cherries, and hotdogs on pizza.

Mostly I just miss my moms cooking.

Mainly, I miss someone else being responsible for feeding us. It was sure nice just rollin' up to the dinner table with a filled plate at the ready. Man, I didn't appreciate that near enough! Great post! =)

mch3n...I'm telling mom, 10, shame on you! LOL

Shell...You are too funny! LOL! Hotdogs on pizza? That doesn't sound to good. Yeah, I think we all miss mom's cooking. Sad when they won't release the recipes! GRR...

Mindy...ohh, the magical plate already made! Nice times, when you didn't have to know all the work that went into feeding us.

I don't think I ever thanked mom for my food.

Thanks Mom!!
