Spin Cycle: Tipping The Scales

This weeks assignment is to give our spin on Appearances.

Okay, so I'm not one to pay much attention to the labels on the products that I buy. Were talking food here. My mother is always talking calories and fat and blah blah blah....Drives me CRAZY!

My body shows I don't read them.

Well my highest weight ever was 220 and I guess I was proud that I have always managed to keep it under that. Well...for sometime now, I have noticed my jeans are getting pretty snug. I decided to get one new pair.

AYE AYE AYE!!!

I went up in a whole size! I know most of you are fairly small compared to me, so you can leave now if you are uncomfortable or are feeling your belly's grow as I speak.

I just don't get how the sizes go. I was wearing pants in a 16/18, well now I am wearing a 20/22. The 16/18 was getting snug and now the 20/22 feels too big. Where the heck are the 19'sssss or should I say the 18/20? Okay maybe there are an 18/20's out there, but they were sold out.

I know I am just babbling on, so what ever, I will move on (in my baggy pants).

I decided it was time to get a handle on this weight thing. You know just drop a few or a hundred pounds.

I step on the scales...222 lbs!!! I was very sad I had went over my limit. Most of you are probably thinking that is a high limit and yes you are right. I should have a limit of 150, but that is just not realistic for me.

I was 155 at 17,
220 at 20,
175 at 22,
218 at 27,
190 at 29,
137 at 32, (don't ask, friends thought I was dying)
180 at 39,
and steadily going uphill ever since, to this whooping 222!

So as you can see, I have been struggling with my weight all my life.

Heck, if I could get my weight at a comfortable 175, I would be most happy.

I was hungry for lunch and I pulled out a can of pears. I looked at the label! I was standing there doing the calculations in my head and said out loud..WTF! The can had 4 half pieces in it. The equivalent of two small pears. The amount of servings for the whole can was one half and one bite of another half! WTHeck! Who eats just a little over a half of a pear? NOT ME!

Point is I don't want to lose weight because I'm fat. I have always been fat! I want to lose some weight cause I went over my body limit. When I get up here in the numbers, I can feel the strain it puts on my day life. At the weight of 160 to 180 I could mow the yard in under two hours, now it takes me all friggin day with many many breaks. I don't like how it affects my ability to do things.

I don't have money to join a gym or go buy equipment, so I am first going to start with my food intake. NO not 1 and a quarter of a pear, but at least monitor and adjust what I consume. I will be taking short rides on my bike to try to get a little more exercise into my life. My biggest downfall is sitting right here at the computer at night. Munchies!!

My goal is:
To get back into my size 16 jeans.
To mow the yard in one sweep.
Sit in my chair with the dogs and not feel crowded (like we used to).

I guess this is a little bit about appearances, sorta.

Honey, if it makes you feel any better, it's about average for everyone to gain 5-7 lbs over the winter.

So, you'll cut out the logical things first. Cut out the soda and fruit juices (maybe switch to seltzer w/lemon or lime) and chew gum while on the computer....or go for pretzel sticks or carrots as a snack to munch on.

I always park as far away as possible in the lot and trump along...I figure I have 2 good legs and I should use 'em! Sometimes, I keep a post-it at the top of the stairs and make myself go up and down at least 20 times a day.

Just my 2 cents....you'll do great. I'm sure that once you put your mind to something, you're halfway there!

Skinny little kid, then chubby till I went out on my own, perfect weight for years till I was living with a guy - put on weight. got rid of the guy, got rid of the weight. Actually went down to 122 pounds at which point people I worked with thought I had cancer or had become anorexic! Got married, put on weight. Became disabled - put on weight. I hate the extra weight. Not for vanity's sake, just makes me feel crummy.

Read the labels. If you buy canned fruit make sure it is packed in unsweetened juice NOT syrup. That syrup will do you in.

Point is? Do what you need to be comfortable with yourself.

Heather, I have learned to not pay attention to numbers. Muscle weighs more than fat. Aim for feeling good. If my clothes start getting snug and I feel short of breath easily or fatigued, I know it's time to cut back on my junk and maybe be a bit more active. I tried the scales at the beginning of the year and monitoring, doesn't work for me. Now, I am doing better by not starving myself but limiting and making better food selections like fresh fruit and vegetables. I hope you get where you feel comfortable.

This is more about just appearance. It's about feeling healthy. You can do it. I know one of my weak points is snacking, I tend to go for the easy prepackaged salty or sweet stuff vs. fresh veggies or fruit. Try making some minor switches first and see where it gets you. Good luck finding a balance and getting to a place where you feel good about yourself. :)

When I was younger the weight thing was all about appearance. Now it's about feeling good and being healthy.
You can do it Heather; you're so strong!

Every time I lose weight and then gain it back, those damned pounds always bring a few friends along for the ride.

I am definitely at my highest weight ever. It's harder to turn. I feel clumsy. I gained a lot of weight with my thyroid issue. It really does stink to have a harder time doing stuff. I would LOVE to lose 10-20lbs (i'm close to 200lbs). My doctor said eating right is 90% of losing weight.
I don't know if you use sparkpeople but it's a FREE diet website. Everyone I was on ediets with moved over there. Lots of really good info. I need to start tracking my calories again. They have a great tracker for that.

I truly know how you feel but it will all work out. Determination is key. I have to stay determined!

I'm certainly not an expert on losing weight. But I have a theory. Humankind wasn't meant to enjoy food -- food was meant to be just for sustenance. So the it follows that we should eat food that we hate. You will eat less and not enjoy it. And lose weight.

Do you think there is a book in this? You could be the case study.

Great goals! Just don’t depress yourself with the weight. I use to mow the yard in a day, now it takes me all summer. I feel crowed sitting alone:-) My goal is to keep my cholesterol down.
Have a great week!

I have had that exact same thought about a can of pears! Cottage cheese to give it some protein is a good companion. I hear ya, Heather. I am in your boat. I HAVE seen the numbers 222 and am on my way back if I don't nip this cheat day/weekend thing in the bud but quick. You're linked! And you can do it!

Heather I know you can do it. Just remember to keep your goals simple and realistic. (I say this because I often have a hard time doing so myself.)

But I agree with the other comments here, Aim for that healthy feeling, not the numbers.

I too hate seeing what "they" consider a serving size. Who would eat just 2 crackers or one cheeze-it. Don't worry about the numbers but get to where you feel good. You can do it!

Kathryn...Yes and that 5-7 lbs always manages to stay put! Great advice, thanks!

Grace...I don't know about you, but when I lost all that weight I felt great about myself. For some reason people thought I was super sick or something. It baffeled me and still does.

Suzicate...cut back on my junk and maybe be a bit more active. Yup, that's the plan right there.

Mrsbear...yeah those little honeybuns are sooo good, maybe grapes instead will help. Thanks.

GREAT spin,Heather! I so enjoyed reading this! One rule to help you- don't consume food after 7pm. Your body doesn't have enough time to process it before you sleep for the night- and that's when our metabolisms slow down! I'd love to know how your weight loss goals shape up! Keep us updated, will you?

Maureen...Thanks. When it comes to food, I don't feel very strong.

Joanie...Don't I know it! It's like having moochers move in!

Angelia...Good luck to you too and thanks for tha info.

Jerry...LOL! Rice cakes anyone? I have been thinking along those lines lately. Food is to survive, not just for something to do. Thanks.

Geradine...takes me all summer, Sorry but that made me laugh! Thanks.

Sprite's Keeper...Yes I love cottage cheese! I hope you have some paddles cause I've been in this boat without them for some time!

Elle...That's the plan sweetie, thanks!

Beccabec...Thanks for stopping by. Sometimes I feel like the person who decides on portion sizes is a child or the size of one.

SD Cowgirl...Thanks, I'm glad! ummm considering I don't usally go to bed till 2am that is a LONG time, to go without something. LOL! I'll keep letting yall know through my gripping, starvation and painfull excersize! LOL! Believe me yall will get sick of hearing about it!

Good luck with everything. We can motivate each other since we are in the same boat (with paddles now!) And I made chili the other night and the serving size was 1/4 cup. OMG. That was ridiculous!

Erica@PLRH said... [Reply to comment]

A healthy weight should about just that - Health not appearances. It sounds like you have your goals and motivation in place. You can do it!

I can relate to having had weight problems my whole life. It is so difficult. I think I finally have come to the point where I want to lose weight for health reasons rather than looks. So, I am trying to make more healthy choices throughout the day. It is a lot more manageable than counting calories!

Been there, done that. Trying to just get healthy now. Good luck and I know you can do it!
