Pet Peeve - Texting And Driving!

My first Spin Cycle..hmmm what to do?
Get pic..check
Link to Sprite's Keeper..I think that might be a check.

Now on to..What are my pet peeves?

Hold on to your hats, gents and your skirts, ladies!
It might just get a little gusty in here!

Well, here's one that has been on our (mine and hubby's) minds lately:

People who are driving down the road with their little phones or blackberries or whatever new device and are texting. To me that would be like me trying to write a letter while driving!

It's bad enough when there are soo many other things to distract us from keeping our eyes on the road. Kids, a cool antique car, phones, navigators (real or computerized), growling tummies looking for food, gas light blinking at you, What was that road kill?

Hubby comes home from work and recants these narrowing escapes from the driver that wasn't looking. Here lately (last few years), those stories have mostly come from people texting.

Just this last Monday, hubby brings home a notice from work. It was a print out of CNN's story on the new rules for drivers of Buses and Big Rigs...NO TEXTING!

I can see that for some folks this is a serious matter and Yes if I was to see a driver texting, you can bet your bum I would turn them in! That would be a serious matter indeed!

Taken directly from CNN's story:
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, drivers take their eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds out of every six seconds while texting. This research shows drivers who text are more than 20 times more likely to get in an accident than nondistracted drivers.

If that is the case...Then, WHY only for Truck Drivers and Bus Drivers? Shouldn't it be for ALL drivers?

I'm beginning to wonder if this qualifies for a pet peeve or maybe it is leaning more towards a rant. I don't know! I just figured since it has been an aggervation in our lives for sooo long, it would be a pet peeve.

Please for the sake of yourselves and those you carry with you...Don't Text and Drive!! It can be dangerous not only for you and the ones you love, but for my hubby and his coworkers.

There is one funny part about all this...Hubby has had two cell phones over the last seven years and still hasn't learnt to text! Most of his older coworkers (his group) don't even have cell phones!! LOL!

If this post didn't qualify, I will have to work on that. I tried!
Head on over to Sprite's Keeper..for more spins!

I didn't even know the meaning or even heard of Pet Peeve until recently. So you are doing ok:)

I understand people text and drive too around here. Today alone I saw two serious accidents on the highway. I don't know their causes exactly but the road is a dangerous place.

In this side of the world they text whilst reading the paper!! I saw someone driving a small bus the other day, it was traveling slowly on the road outside my office - the driver turned round to see that his last passenger had left the door open so he jumped off the driver seat, ran to the middle of the bus to close the door, ran back and continued driving!!!

I am upset when I see people do this. I am not a driver yet and I promise I won't do this. It takes your concentration away from the road and puts others people at risk.

Pull over and talk.

Good spin. A few years ago, a guy in our area was texting (or it might have been talking, I can't remember!), anyway, he hit an ambulance and was killed instantly...and do you know his family sued the city and WON! CRAZY!!!!!!

It is a law around here. No texting and driving. And you can't be talking on your cell phone in a school or construction zone. It seems crazy to me, but you see people doing all kinds of things while driving. Texting, looking at maps, eating, yelling at their kids (while looking in the rearview mirror), putting on makeup. Once I saw someone reading a book!! Crazy.

Suzicate's story is crazy!!

Oh, this completely counts! Texting while driving is extremely dangerous and I think the rules especially count for the buses and big rigs since they can cause much more damage and injury due to the mere size of their vehicle. I still think it should be for all vehicles, but there is more cost in the bigger ones.
You're completely right.
You're linked!

I freely admit I have done this. It's wrong. It's dangerous. It's a horrible, horrible habit. I SHOULD BE FINED. In my defense, it's usually when I'm stopped at a traffic light but still....the phone should be out of reach. I DO obey the law in school zones.

Good pet peeve and you are right, there should be laws. I have seen more accidents in the last week. I can't help but think it's from distractions.

No driving and texting for any driver is what I believe in. There is absolutely no need for texting and driving at the same time. We see drivers run stop signs every day over and over and that is a pet peeve of mine also but texting is absolutely not a necessity.

There are way too many stupid people on the roads. I get behind at least one person every day that is either talking or texting on the cell phone. Makes you wonder how we ever lived with them, doesn't it?

I think that some states have laws about texting and driving. Not sure how it can be enforced.

There is a whole crop of youngsters out there in the 12 to 15 year old age bracket who never, and I do mean never put down their cell phones for a minute. I shudder to think what the highways are going to become when they all start driving.

Unelievable...I will never understand that. Talk about dangerous! And I see these ppl swerving all over the road!

There's no excuse for it...the same rules should apply for all. If you're dying to text, then PULL OVER!

My state just made it illegal to be on the phone at all-texting or talking.

I have a smartphone and if I'm sitting at a red light, I will sometimes pick it up and check my mail or something. I'm VERY good about setting it down immediately though--I don't continue to try and read while I'm driving.
I also have been known to bring a good book with me in the car and read at stoplights.

Apparently I have a reading addiction. :)
