Hubby and his Backstrap

OMGoodness, I have been reading posts for three hours and still have nine posts to go! Take one day off from the computer and it takes two days to get caught back up. By tomorrow afternoon that number will be up around fifteen. If I didn't get to your post today, I hope to by tomorrow!

This weekend has been a very lazy weekend. Just a lot of hanging out with hubby.

Animal activist, don't read!

Hubby got some backstrap from a friend, about a week ago. I will NOT touch the stuff! If you are wondering what backstrap is..first it is deer..

Then it is the meat down the back of a deer.

Totally gross in my opinion! Bambi!

Anyway, so this backstrap has been in the freezer for a week, to my hubby that is way too long. He really loves the stuff!

This is how much...
He is driving his big rig down the road in a slightly foggy dark morning. A buck runs out onto the road and hubby (not wanting to damage his trucks front grill) swerves to miss it, but his back trailer tires hit it anyways. Hubby gets out to check the damage, but really he got out to slaughter the dead deer. He had a electric cooler in his truck, for all of his Big Reds. Those got dumped all over the floor of his truck, deer meat was way more important! In his rush of cutting just the backstrap, he stabbed his leg! I think the salivating over what he was going to have for dinner, kept him from noticing his own blood and pain.

Then he had the nerve to bring it home and put it in MY sink. He was so excited and told me to look without telling me what I would be looking at. I will tell you my reaction was NOT what he was expecting! LOL! Yes, I can laugh about it, NOW!

Ever since that day, I haven't looked or touched raw Venison (deer meat). When he is preparing it and cooking it, I am in a different room for the entire time. I have tried it twice and each time it was gross.

Every time I make chili, he says "The only thing this chili is missing is some backstrap" or "You know what would really be great with this chili?"

So Saturday he asks...Do we have the makings for chili? Amazingly we did.

He cooked his backstrap and I made the chili. My only restriction was that he couldn't put the meat in the pot of chili, until I got my bowl!
He was sweet and didn't contaminate the whole pot.
His package had 20 pieces in it and he has 3 left, less than 24 hrs later!

Hubby says (while stuffing his face) I am soo glad you don't like backstrap, cause there wasn't enough for me to share anyways! LOL!

Lucky me!

I've never had venison, but it is a real island staple out here in the winter for most families.

Had venison chili yesterday. Not a big fan of venison, but this didn't have a gamey taste...was wonderful!

I had venison once, in a fancy restaurant and they made it quite tasty. but when I was young and my dad would go deer hunting, I thanked the Lord every time he came home empty handed.

Not a fan of deer or ram...I just don't care for game. Glad he can feed himself if the world ever came to an end, though!

Well, as you know, we eat venison on a regular basis at my house. I rarely have to buy other meats (although I do, just for the variety). In the last 20 odd years I've come up with alot of recipes! People say you'd never know my roast was deer. And yes, think what a gem of a guy you have there if the zombie appocolypse ever comes to pass!! LMAO!

I heartily support everyone's right to kill if you eat it. Well, you know, unless the prey is human.

So I guess watching Bambi for him is like watching the Food Network for me? Way too tempting?

this is why vegetarianism is a life half lived :)

Maureen...I remember up in Maine, it was normal for people to have a freezer full of deer meat just to make it through winter.

Suzicate...I never knew venison chili was so popular.

Pseudo...If I was to ever go to a fancy restaurant, then I might try it. The chances of the whole senerio, are very unlikely.

Tinkerschnitzel...Don't get him started!! He's already telling me I need to get his ammunition restocked, just in case.

Spot...I knew you would like this post. Maybe you can give me some cooking ideas for the icky stuff. He would survive just fine, I would be zombie food! LOL!

Eric...ROTFLMAO!!!

Sprite's Keeper...Exactly!! Caveman emerges!

Sas...Welcome! Thanks for being a follower, I'm headed over to your blog right now! I'm more on the side of vegetarian, than carnivore.

My hubby is a game-eater too. Last year he managed to get a pig in Northern California. You know, one of those really mean, ugly looking ones? I don't eat that stuff and he *usually* knows better than to try and pass it off on me. He opted to cook spaghetti one night (this alone should have warned me) and I took a big ol bite. Right into a big piece of sausage. I said, "I didn't think we had any sausage. I don't remember buying it." He answered, "You didn't." I couldn't finish the plate. Dang him.

I have never eaten venison. Not that I'm opposed to dining on some deer, the opportunity just never presented itself. Now the image of your husband carving up some fresh roadkill will forever be imprinted on my brain. LOL. Saying he loves backstrap would be an understatement. Great story.

Mindy...Hubby just informed me this evening that he is going to be getting a Wild boar (hog) next week. I've had hog and it's not that bad.
Surprise dishes don't fly (or maybe they do)in this house!

Mrsbear...LOL! Yeah, he can go wild over it!

Not a fan of deer either. Blech. I've tried the sausage, chili, and ribs. I just can't do it.
Glad he let you have a bowl first! :-)
